“Move It to Lose It” (MITLI) after-school is a project of the Shri Krishna Nidhi (SKN) Foundation. The MITLI program motivates children to be physically active and learn about living a healthy lifestyle. This six week program, delivered in the after school setting educates elementary school children ages 8 to 15 years about a healthier lifestyle by teaching them about the basics of good nutrition and the importance of physical activity.
The high energy dance and fitness training raise awareness about childhood obesity and motivate the participants to be physically active. Children are taught to enjoy physical activity through the dance forms like Bhangra, Bollywood and Hip-Hop.
Healthy living and hands-on nutrition instruction is given to children about the various food groups, calories, and the importance of eating a balanced meal.
Twenty to thirty children are recruited from the school system to participate in a weekly class instruction in the after school program. The weekly high intensity dance class and nutrition and healthy eating education class will teach the children the importance of these factors in the prevention of obesity.
The instruction sessions are held in the after school program so that they do not compromise their regular curriculum and help occupy their time in a constructive manner.
The effectiveness of this program is evaluated by the enrollment, attendance, and retention of the children in the MITLI classes.
A pre and post test questionnaire is administered to evaluate the increase in knowledge of these children about obesity and the role of physical activity and nutrition in fighting this national epidemic.
